JUDGES

Tom Cigolle AKC Lure coursing judge 2009 National Lure Coursing CompetitionTom
Cigolle, (WILMINGTON, OHIO) SALUKIS

Tom became involved in the sport of  lure coursing in 1983, working at various events as Field Trial Secretary, Lure Operator, Huntmaster, etc.   By the end of 1985 Tom was a fully licensed ASFA all-breed judge. Six years later, in July 1991 when AKC first approved coursing regulations and sanctioned the sport, Tom was one of the ASFA judges that was "grandfathered" into the program.

His judging assignments have included numerous AKC  tests and trials, and ASFA trials for over 60 different clubs.  He has also judged  5 ASFA International Invitationals, 15 ASFA Regional Invitationals in 6 different ASFA Regions.  Throughout his judging career he has  judged over 400 trials and over 11,000 Sighthounds.

Tom has coursed Afghan Hounds, Salukis, and Greyhounds over his long lure coursing involvement, however,  his primary focus and first love is for Salukis. For Tom there is nothing more thrilling and exciting to witness our Sighthounds exhibit their great passion, enthusiasm, and zeal as they run the lure. He still gets goose bumps when a Sighthound puts in a fantastic run.

Jack Downing AKC Lure coursing judge 2009 National Lure Coursing CompetitionJack Downing, (LUCAS, TEXAS)   ITALIAN GREYHOUNDS

Jack and his wife, Teri Dickinson, have been involved with Italian Greyhounds , participating in Lure Coursing, Agility, Herding and Obedience since 1988. Jack and Teri have put a lot of effort into getting Italian Greyhounds fully recognized in both AKC and ASFA Lure coursing.

Jack has been both the First Vice-President and President of the Italian Greyhound Club of America; and he is currently Regional Director - American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA)

Steve Curry AKC Lure coursing judge 2009 National Lure Coursing CompetitionSteve Curry, (Columbia, Kentucky)  WHIPPETS

Steve Curry lives with his wife, Jan Swayze-Curry, on a small farm in Columbia, Ky, with their cows, horses, three cats, and a menegrie of dogs.

Steve has had a dog and a horse, literally, since the day he was born. He has not been without either for more than a very short while. Although he has been involved in all types of imaginable dog and horse activities, coursing the hounds is the activity that he loves the most.

He currently has a variety of hounds in his care; Afghans, Borzois, Greyhounds, Pharoah Hounds, Dachshunds, Coon Hounds, Beagles, even a few non-hound breeds, and his first and favorite sighthound, the Whippet.

Laurie Soutar, (Ontario, Canada)  GRAYHOUNDS

Laurie Soutar has been breeding Greyhounds under the Lakilanni prefix since 1976. Since that time she has produced more that 100 bench champions, and 70 field champions. She has produced Best in Show and Specialty winners, Best in Field, Race Meet and open field Hunt winners, as well as High in Trial winners in obedience and rally. Lakilanni dogs have been ranked number one in conformation, lure coursing, open field coursing, and racing, in multiple registries. She is actively involved in both live and lure coursing, and strongly believes that conformation and performance are necessary and equal components of any breeding program.

She has written articles for numerous publications on Greyhounds, sighthounds, structure and function, feeding and training. She is a UKC conformation, obedience and rally judge, as well as an AKC, CKC and ASFA lure coursing judge, and has judged numerous national specialty field trials, as well as ASFA’s International Invitational.

LURE OPERATORS

Tom Golcher - Falcon, Colorado  BORZOIS

My wife, KC, introduced me to Borzois in 1992 by taking me to visit Bonnie Dalzell of Silkenswift Borzois, in Maryland. This visit with Bonnie left such an impression on me that I knew one day we would own a Borzoi.   after our visit with Bonniewe were assigned to Germany. Even though we did not yet own a sighthound, we continued our sighthound education by joining the local German racing and coursing club, Windhund-Rennsportverein Solitude e.V (Sachsenheimring). Even before we had our first borzoi, the Germans were teaching me how to run the lure, operate a box, differences in breed running styles, etc. It is also where we met our mentors—fellow Borzoi owners and dear friends to this day. Our first Borzoi, Silkenswift Ambassador, joined us in 1997. Hans and Uschi helped train our hound - and us - in all aspects of German and European racing and coursing. We learned a lot as evidenced by the fact that Ambassador won the FCI’s premier event, the 2000 World Oval Racing Championships!! We soon had two, then four Borzoi, and then puppies too. After 10 years in Germany, KC and I returned to the U.S. during the winter of 2003. Soon after, we purchased a small ranch to accommodate our growing pack. After fencing the entire perimeter, we began offering monthly “Fun Runs” under the sponsorship of our home club, Rocky Mountain Borzoi Club (RMBC). We encouraged people to bring their hounds (and non-hounds—fun runs are open to all) to train for coursing and racing events. I also use this opportunity to provide training for those who would like to learn lure operating, hunt master skills, course design, etc. Through the Colorado Lure Coursing Association (CLCA) and RMBC, KC and I host AKC Lure Coursing, North American Whippet Racing Association (NAWRA), International Silken Windhound Society (ISWS) and Large Gazehound Racing Association (LGRA) events. We will soon add National Oval Track Racing Association (NOTRA) events. I have been one of CLCA’s primary lure operators since 2004. I have also lure operated for the 2007 Afghan National Specialty, 2008 Silken Fest, CLCA’s Grand National in 2006, 2007, and 2008, and the 2008 Other Breed (OB) Nationals. Since 2004 I have operated the lure numerous times as a guest during trials for Rocky Mountain Coursing Club (RMCC), Rocky Mountain Irish Wolfhound Association (RMIWA), Eastern Slope Coursing Association (ESCA), and Albuquerque Whippet Fanciers (AWFA). In 2008 I added to my continued sighthound sport training by being certified to judge AKC lure coursing events.

Bob Jordan - West Virginia

Gary Runyon - Oklahoma

Sherita Tabner - Santa Anna, Texas  BORZOIS

In 2001 my passion for Borzoi was ignited when I received Mir, the dog that was to become my foundation. It was through him that I became involved in the sighthound performance arena and the conformation ring. While I do dabble in the show ring and have finished conformation Champions and Dual Champions, I am committed to the performance sighthound. I have produced BIF and multiple BIF winners in both ASFA and AKC, GRC and ORC title holders on the straight and oval track, and highly competitive open field hunters. My primary focus at this time is lure coursing and open field coursing, and I believe that participation in the performance sports can only strengthen our breeds, both in body and in mind.

I learned the art of lure operation under the tutelage of Richard Stilwell, Ray Woods and Gary Runyan. I have been guiding hounds on the courses since 2006, and I believe that safe lure operation is the most important aspect of my responsibility. I received my AKC performance judging license in 2008, and have greatly enjoyed judging the various sighthounds.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the 2009 AKC Lure Coursing Championships.
