IAN DAVIES I
spent the first half of my life in the United Kingdom where (to be
honest) I never ever heard of lure coursing (!) … and my
association with purebred dogs was limited to the Standard Poodles
that my wife exhibited in the show ring. Some years after returning
to the USA, she became interested in Rhodesian Ridgebacks, which she
both bred and owner-handled to much success .. but I regret to say
that the show ring “scene” held no appeal for me, and I
invariably stayed home! My wife began coursing her RRs in the early
1990s .. and when she came home after a trial in 1992, pleading that
I attend an event with her and witness “a dog sport that you’re
guaranteed to enjoy(!)”, I did the dutiful husband thing, and
escorted her to the very next lure coursing trial .. which was held
in a torrential downpour that lasted all weekend! Despite this (less
than idyllic) introduction, I had a great time and quickly grew to
admire and respect the sighthound breeds; in particular Ridgebacks,
Whippets, Saluki and Greyhounds, all of which we have owned, loved
and competed over the 20 years or so that have transpired since that
first soggy weekend. We have been truly blessed by owning more than
our fair share of really outstanding coursing hounds, notably
Rhodesian Ridgebacks of my wife’s breeding, and have attained a
great deal of success in the sport.
Competing
our hounds led us to taking a more proactive interest in the sport,
and we soon found ourselves performing many of the Field Committee
functions essential to the running of a lure coursing event. It was
not too long before we both became certified AKC Judges, and I have
since become a fairly seasoned ASFA Judge and lure operator. These
credentials have assisted us in traveling to all corners of this
great country for both competitive events and judging assignments,
and these travels have (in turn) introduced us to some of the nicest
and most giving folks it has ever been our pleasure to have known.
Many of them are, and will remain, lifelong friends. On a personal
note, I am extra-fortunate in that the Houston assignment is my
second opportunity to judge at an NLCC, (I have competed at many
others) .. and have also been privileged to judge and operate the
lure at ASFA International Invitational events. I hope that everyone
attending in December truly appreciates enjoys the outstanding
competition, great sportsmanship and wonderful camaraderie that these
events foster.
I
am extremely honored and grateful to have been asked to judge at the
NLCC in Cat Spring, TX, in December, and thank the AKC, AHCoA and LKC for
this great honor. I anticipate with pleasure not only the event
itself, but also welcome the chance to renew many of the
acquaintances and friendships that I have made during my association
with this wonderful sport, and the opportunities it has afforded me
to travel throughout the USA and Canada.

TOM GOLCHER My wife KC introduced me to borzois in 1992 and we were
assigned to Germany soon after. Even though we did not yet own a
sighthound, we continued our sighthound education by joining the
local German racing and coursing club, Windhund-Rennsportverein
Solitude (Sachsenheimring). Even before we had our first borzoi,
the Germans were teaching me how to run the lure, operate a box, the
differences in breed running styles, etc. It is also where we met our
mentors who helped train our hounds—and us--in all aspects of
German and European racing and coursing. After 10 years in Germany
and running our hounds under FCI rules, KC and I returned to the U.S.
during the winter of 2003. Soon after, we purchased a small ranch to
accommodate our growing borzoi pack. After fencing the entire
perimeter, we began offering monthly “Fun Runs” under the
sponsorship of our home club, Rocky Mountain Borzoi Club (RMBC). We
encouraged people to bring their hounds (and non-hounds—fun
runs are open to all) to train for coursing and racing events. I also
use this opportunity to provide training for those who would like to
learn lure operating, hunt master skills, course design, etc. Through
the Colorado Lure Coursing Association (CLCA), Rocky Mountain
Coursing Club (RMCC), and RMBC, KC and I host AKC Lure Coursing
including CA Trials, North American Whippet Racing Association
(NAWRA), International Silken Windhound Society (ISWS), Large
Gazehound Racing Association (LGRA), and National Oval Track Racing
(NOTRA) events. I have been one of CLCA’s primary lure
operators since 2004. I have also lure operated for the 2007 Afghan
National Specialty, 2008 Silken Fest, CLCA’s Grand National in
2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, the 2008 Other Breed (OB) Nationals,
and the 2009 AKC NLCC. Since 2004 I have operated the lure numerous
times as a guest during trials for RMCC, Rocky Mountain Irish
Wolfhound Association (RMIWA), Eastern Slope Coursing Association
(ESCA), and Albuquerque Whippet Fanciers (AWFA). In 2008 I added to
my continued sighthound sport training by becoming an AKC LC judge.
I’m delighted with the opportunity to judge at the AKC NLCC and
I am looking forward to some really excellent coursing in Houston,
Texas the first weekend in December.

JANET LOTZ I am a retired chemistry teacher living in central Ohio. Currently I have
one retired lure coursing Afghan Hound and a young poodle who loves to chase
plastic bags. It was 1968 that brought the first Afghan Hound into my life.
Watching her run free across fields near my home was a magical experience, but,
lure coursing did not exist at that time so it was just weekend fun. In 1982 I
met Helen Haas (a long time Afghan Hound breeder). As we talked and I picked out
one of her puppies for my next dog she told me about lure coursing and said
there were lots of trials in and around Ohio. Indeed, Helen was right and I
found a new hobby, joined a club, OKIGO, and took to the highways and the
weekends became even more fun.
I began judging in the late 1980s. As the years went by I added more Afghan Hounds, and eventually a Borzoi joined the
mix.. The fondest memories of lure coursing for me are the friends that I have made and the awe I experience watching the hounds as they run free across a field chasing a lure.

JACK DOWNING I have been involved with coursing since 1996. My wife, Terri Dickinson, was a driving force in getting IGs accepted in Lure Coursing. In 1996 I accompanied her to my first Lure Trial. It was an Alamo Area Whippet Club trial in San Antonio, TX. It was one of the first trials ever for IGs to run in the ASFA miscellaneous class. I was amazed at how fast and athletic those little guys were. It was also my first time I saw many of the other sighthound breeds. I knew from that first trial that I wanted to be involved with Lure Coursing.
After attending as many trials as possible over the next several years I got more involved in coursing by learning how to operate the lure, and eventually obtaining my judging license for both AKC and ASFA in 2003.
In 2002 I was elected as ASFA Region 4 Director, and held the position for five years. After a two year break, I was re-elected to the ASFA Board in 2009 for another two years.
I have been fortunate to have judged several AKC Breed Specialties. I was honored to judge the ASFA International Invitational in 2007 and the AKC National Chamionships in 2009. I have had the pleasure and privilege of operating the lure at numerous ASFA International Invitational and other prestigious events. In 2010 I had the honor of being named the ASFA Lure Operator of the Year.
It will be my pleasure to be a Lure Operator for the 2011 AKC NLCC.
